Camino Frances Journal – Day 8

Two years ago today, I was walking the Camino Frances. While on the trail, I didn’t really post all that often; therefore, for the next 38 days, I will be posting a little blurb from my journal and up to 10 photos (not necessarily the best pictures but more that they represent that day in some particular way). Today is day 8 – April 28th. Estella to Los Arcos

On the way out of the city, the way markers were scarce so we thought we were lost. But eventually we found markers again so all was fine. Soon we reached the Irache fountain, just past 9am so the wine was flowing.  Yep – a fountain that not only had water but also wine! Met some other pilgrims including Aussie Catherine and Austrian Max. Max wants to leave Austria for Canada or Australia. The wine was very young so blah but I had a snack with it. I can now say I’ve had a wine and cheese tasting at 9:15am! …

Came across an old guy dressed as a pilgrim heading the other way – he said his heart was hurting, his leg and arm were hurting, he was hungry, wanted a shower in an albergue, etc. Essentially, he wanted money. Robin gave him a bit but we both felt it was a scam.  …

The rest of the day’s walk was beautiful with expansive vistas, rippling green grass, cool breezes, a bit of conversation with David from New York (says he’s of the Rittenhouse family and is also related to the guy who invented the zipper). It was funny in that when I first saw him, he had struck me as a rich guy escaping his life and during the conversation, it turned out I was right! …

Wandered the town for a bit. Los Arcos is a cute small town with nice narrow old streets. Some interesting architecture. Got too cold so we headed back to the bar to hang out.  Had a glass of wine for 1€! Dinner was at 7pm in a cellar like basement with curved ceiling made from bricks – was neat. Dinner was bad, though. …At least dessert of chocolate cake with cream was decent – opposite of the Styrofoam cake we had yesterday. …

Sleep is necessary.

  1. Beautiful scenery today!

You had me freaked out about the wine fountain until I scrolled down and looked at the picture, I was picturing a decorative fountain with wine running over statues out in the open that you were expected to drink from! The reality looked much more pleasant!
