Camino Frances Journal – Day 20

Two years ago today, I was walking the Camino Frances. While on the trail, I didn’t really post all that often; therefore, for the next 38 days, I will be posting a little blurb from my journal and up to 10 photos (not necessarily the best pictures but more that they represent that day in some particular way). It’s kind of like a little memorial as for me, the season of spring is now irrevocably linked to the Camino experience. Today is day 20 – May 10th. Carrión de los Condes to Terradillos de los Templarios

Up at 6:15, only thanks to my alarm. My laundry was still wet but I had to pack it anyway. Took a minute to listen to the early morning church bells and then was on the road by 7am. …

Walked along a fairly quiet road for a while and then soon was on the Roman road (it’s original except for the gravel covering) for the first time. I couldn’t resist breaking out the Gladiator soundtrack for this part of the walk! My Facebook status today was: “The sun is shining, I am walking into the west, a cool breeze is blowing from the east, I’m treading ancient Roman roads trodden by Emperor Agustus himself as I listen to Gladiator soundtrack, and I’m alone. Life doesn’t get better than this.” …

It was almost 20km before I came to a town so the sandwiches I made last night came in handy. I arrived at one of the albergues in Terradillos about 1:30pm. Did the usual clean up and prep for the next day. I then relaxed on the patio with a sandwich and a hot chocolate – my entertainment was a lady doing yoga while smoking. Throughout the afternoon, pilgrims kept arriving but this place was full by mid-afternoon. Unfortunately, the Camino Frances has gotten so popular it is becoming almost necessary to either call ahead to reserve (but not all places accept reservations) or stopping your daily walk by 2pm at the latest. …

Not a whole lot to see in the village of Terradillos. Of course, the church was closed. Saw a stork on the bell tower. I told an old man “hola!” and nodded in greeting – he just stared at me. This is the second time this has happened – am I not supposed to tell old men hello?? …

I spent almost an hr reading in the warm sun at the foot of the village church. I could get used to this life…
